We follow both the Tamil seasons and the Gregorian calendar to discover the seasonal produce harvested and distributed in Auroville.

Post-Summer 2024

mid-June to mid-August | முதுவேனில் | Mudhu-venil

includes the months: mid-June to mid-July |  ஆனி  |  Āni   &   mid-July to mid-August  |  ஆடி  | Ādi

We are all waiting for this as the heat reduces, there are some showers here and there. And again, we can start growing crops the same as Pin-Pani (Pre-Summer) but also some other crops like cluster beans, avarai etc.- its still a bit early for these crops but we can still do it. You can see the similarity of this season with Pin pani – as they both are also good for planting peanut.

The mango harvest is slowly ending, and spinach can be found in abundance. Check what will be harvested by the Auroville Farms and Orchards over the next few months:

Vegetables: Bottle gourd, Brinjal, Cucumber, Ladies finger, Long bean, Pumpkin.

Greens & Herbs: Basella spinach, Basil, Chicken spinach, Lemongrass, Micro greens, Ponnangani, Thandu keerai (Amaranth).

Fruits: Banana, Coconut, Jack fruit, Lemon, Mango, Papaya, Ramphal, Soursop, Watermelon.

I’m amazed and grateful that someone has done all this work to help us focus on what is available in our region and when. On top of that to offer suggestions of what to cook at what time is really wonderful! I’ve been wanting to do a food festival to point out all these things and encourage the eating of locally grown foods in a fun way, like with cooking demonstrations, competitions, exploring local instead of imported, hill station produce.

Thank you for such a marvelous gift!

    Jack
