In Auroville, we embrace diversity when it comes to food sourcing, constantly experimenting with various methods. Our food sources include farms, orchards nestled within forests, cashew plantations, hydroponics, rooftop gardens and even foraging for edible weeds. While our community may not be self-sufficient, we actively explore and adapt numerous possibilities for sourcing food, always mindful of preserving and respecting our natural resources.
The farms play a vital role as our primary producers, and they prioritise organic cultivation. Within the realm of farming, we also witness a great deal of diversity in techniques and focuses, such as permaculture and biodynamic farming. Our farms yield a wide array of produce, including vegetables, fruits, greens and herbs, as well as rice and grains. Some farms even engage in dairy or poultry production.
